CCL - Cruise Lines and timing
I had just started tracking on Royal Caribbean (RCL) when it was mentioned here last week. It got me to looking at the whole industry, and I looked at Carnival (CCL). The two track very closely, but CCL has an even higher P/E. They are still paying a dividend, though.
On a larger note, do you all have any thoughts on timing shorts and puts? Obviously, it's great to buy a fundamentally weak company on a recent rise. But financials aren't released too often, and expectations can be misleading. So what is a good time to short?

Interesting observation about how CCL and RCL track. CCL has a Z"-score in the black though, while RCL has one in the distress zone. Might make an interesting pairs trade, going long CCL and short an equal dollar amount of RCL. That way, you cancel out most of the market and industry risk.
Good question about timing. The tricky thing about betting on quarterly results is that it's not enough to be right about the results -- the news may already be priced into the stock. All things equal, if a company is close to releasing its earnings, I'd rather wait to see them before shorting the company. Same on the long side. Perhaps others have different opinions.
Flu season. All the passengers get sick at the same time, they have to dock the boat, it's all over the press and all the elderly folks cancel their trips.
When you do that short, at the same time go long on companies in the travel insurance business -- the ones that cover trip cancellation.
