BKS - A buggywhip industry
Barnes and Noble [BKS] is likley to get a nice bounce this morning on the annoucement that rival Borders Group [BGP] will file for bankruptcy and close 150 stores.
This is being treated as a positive for BKS but, in reality, it shows the permanently broker business model for physical booksellers. This is similar to the way digital downloads killed the CD industry. Remember Sam Goody, Tower Records etc.? All gone as the music business migrated to I-Tunes.
Amazon and E-bay have killed the book business and the Kindle, Nook and I-Pad were probably the last nail in the coffin of both Borders and BKS. Use the expected rally to short BKS and you're likely to do well over time. BKS is going down for the count in the end. They haven't turned a net profit for the past few years and they are burning through their cash.

Interesting. BKS also has an Altman Z"-score in the distress zone.
